Free Services
given to the
Open Source Community

I've been lucky enough to support my family and myself by using and producing Open Source Software. I've been especially fortunate to help produce a lot of government GIS data, which is of course publicly available.

However, I think Open Source is more than just a job; and I think every Open Source user should give something back to the community beyond services they get paid for. For more on my views click here.

I do not develop software for free or give free technical support. You have to pay me for these services. However, I contribute my services as an activist and organizer to the community. In particular,

  • I coordinate the Portland Linux/Unix Group. I've done this since January 1995.
  • I cofounded the Mid-Willamette Valley Linux Group.
  • I helped the Eugene Linux Users Group organize
  • I helped a number of other LUGs and Open Source groups organize
  • I'm Technical Director of LinuxFund.org.
  • I give talks at conferences and elsewhere.
I generally donate the time and resources, but require travel expenses when overnight travel is involved.
  • I'm a former Peace Corps Volunteer (Malaysia 1973-76), and I'm always interested in expanding the role of Open Source Software in developing countries.

I am willing to help anyone interested in starting a new Open Source Group. In most cases, I'm willing to do this as a volunteer. In the case of commercial Open Source endeavors, I expect to be paid as a consultant.
