David Mandel's Mini Art Gallery
The following are images that interest me for one reason or another.
In most cases, they were created for a project I was involved in or
they were created using software or algorithms I created. In other
cases, I just like the image.

Logo for the ill-fated Linux NorthWest Conference
By ???
Someone created this logo for the ill-fated Linux NorthWest
Conference. I would like to know who did this, so I could give them
credit. We have used derivatives of this logo a lot.

Map from Eastern Oregon Resource Management Plan of 1997
By Corey Smith and Jeff Nighbert of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management
and David Mandel
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management needed to publish several thousand
copies a Resource Management Plan containing about 100 different
maps - all of which used a common base. They needed to do this
using as few colors as possible to save money on printing.
(We proposed using CDs instead of paper, but management
rejected this idea.) In any case, I created a very subtle base map
using nothing but light gray tones. Altho, all the mapping was
done in Arc Plot, I used ghost script, gimp, and other Open Source
tools to produce the image used in the base map.
The results speak for themselves.

Shaded Map of Columbia Basin
By Jeff Nighbert of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management using software
by David Mandel and lots of help from Infotec Development employees.
This map has been very popular. BLM has printed over 10,000 copies
of this map for the public. It also took first place in the
cartographic design division at ESRI's 1995 Arc/Info Conference.

Map of Pacific NorthWest showing Earth Curvature
By Jeff Nighbert of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management using algorithms
by David Mandel and lots of help from Infotec Development employees.
This map is pretty fakey. We tryed to exaggerate the Earth's
curvature for effect. It did create a pretty map which was
quite popular.
